Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has had some ups and downs since its premiere, and while the show’s potential seems obvious to everyone, it’s as though the series has just been missing that little something to make it special. Well, Stan Lee (who’ll be making an appearance on the show when it returns on February 4) has taken the opportunity to sound off on what he thinks would make the show better, and fans will be happy to see that it’s in line with what many of them have been thinking, too.

According to Stan “The Man” himself, what the show really needs is some more superheroes, and he thinks it’s only a matter of time before they start moving in that direction:

It could end up being like The Avengers. It could be an umbrella under which a lot of superheroes will come in. They haven’t really done that yet, but I think they will eventually. S.H.I.E.L.D. could be a way of bringing in a lot of superheroes and villains together, and I think they will eventually get to that point… I have no favorites. I love them all. The more they can crowd into it, the better I’d like it.

Years ago, there was a show on television called The Man From U.N.C.L.E. I wanted to get something like that, but more superhero-ish, so I came up with S.H.I.E.L.D. There was a character we had called Sergeant Fury and his Howling Commandos. That was a book we did of World War II. And then we stopped it after a while, and a lot of readers said, ‘Where is Sergeant Fury now?’ So I thought, wow, it would be great to say that today he’s a colonel, and he’s the head of S.H.I.E.L.D.! So it all came together with Colonel Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D.

Personally, I think the trouble with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is far deeper than just adding a few superheroes. We’ll know for sure, once J. August Richards returns as Deathlok, if that’s really what the show was missing, but I just don’t think that the addition of superheroes alone will solve anything. In fact, it may even create new issues if those pre-existing flaws aren’t worked out beforehand.

Thankfully, as we saw in the two episodes preceding this odd mini break they’ve taken (Official Nerd Bastards reviews HERE and HERE), the show seems to have been working out some of the kinks, so maybe I’ve spoken too soon.

Do you think Stan Lee is right; will the addition of superheroes fix the show? Will it bring in new viewers, and bring back those that have stopped watching already? Let us know what you think!
