Here’s some comic book-related news no one should have a problem with. It appears that British director Neil Marshall has been recruited to direct the pilot for NBC’s Constantine pilot, which is based on the long-running DC Comics/Vertigo comic Hellblazer.

Deadline reported today that Marshall has signed up to launch Constantine, which could go to series as early as this fall if NBC likes what they see. Marshall is fell know for cult classic films like Dog Soldiers, The Descent, Doomsday, and Centurion, all of which have some kind of genre angle. Marshall also has TV experience having directed a couple of episodes of Game of Thrones, including fan-favorite “Blackwater” is season 2, and the recent premiere episode for the pirate drama Black Sails.

Good news, right? Well, Marshall is British so that’s a step in the right direction. You’ll recall that the last time John Constantine was transferred into a film project it was in 2005’s big screen Constantine, which cast the very American (well,  Canadian technically) Keanu Reeves who didn’t even so much as attempt a British accent. Might Marshall influence some proper casting? I guess we’ll see.

For my mind, going with Marshall’s a good choice. I can’t say I’ve loved all his films, but they are never not boring; The Descent is a modern horror classic, and while I’m a fan of Doomsday, I admire it’s “everything-including-the-kitchen-sink” gonzo storytelling style.

The Constantine series is being developed by David S. Goyer (Man of Steel) and Daniel Cerone (The Mentalist, Dexter). It will follow the weekly adventures of John Constantine, a sorcerer, con artist and detective who traffics in supernatural circles. The character was introduced in the pages of Swamp Thing in the mid-80s before being spun-off into his own book which ran for some 300 issues. Constantine is also rumored to be a character in Guillermo del Toro‘s Justice League Dark film project.

Also, if Constantine does go to series, it will be joined by other new DC Comics TV shows coming to the small screen this fall including, The CW’s The Flash and Fox’s Gotham about the early days of Jim Gordon on the Gotham police force. Arrow will likely get a third season commitment from The CW as well.

More news as it develops.
