To the uncultured, Rescue Rangers was one of several Disney Animated cartoons from the early-mid 90’s. It was in the same animation block as Duck Tales, Tale Spin, and Darkwing Duck. All we’re great in their own right and each had a catchy theme song that most 25-30 year old’s know by heart. Rescue Rangers saw chipmunks Chip & Dale and their friends acting as private detectives in the service of other animal clients. Hijinks, hilarity and heart was prevalent in every episode. And let’s not forget about Gadget Hackwrench, the tomboy chipmunk that most boys had a crush on but will never admit.
THR reports that commercial director Robert Rugan and Disney have pitched a live-action/CGI movie based on the property. At this time, cast and release date have not been discussed. All we know about the story of the film at this point is that it will tell an origin story of the duo.
I grew up on this cartoon and many like it. Just hearing the name gets my inner child all excited. But then I remember that most live-action CGI hybrid movies suck. On the other hand, while it might appear that Disney is riding on the financial success of Alvin and the Chipmunks, I don’t think it’s a fair comparison. Disney takes their stuff pretty seriously. They care how things work out quality wise.
I just hope they get the original voice actors, and that the theme song isn’t updated. Other than that, I’ve very OK with this.
