It’s been pretty clear from the posters and recent trailers that Electro, Rhino and Green Goblin are the foremost villains in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. But who else from Spider-Man’s rogues gallery will be making an appearance? Well, if you’ve seen that clip with the room full of classic villainous weaponry, there is the possibility of something sinister. Nerdgasm on hold regarding what that could mean. The film’s director, Marc Webb has just revealed who actor B.J. Novak will be appearing as. Swing on through the break to find out.

I’ll save you the drum roll and just say it: Novak is playing none other than Alistair Smythe in the upcoming sequel, Webb confirmed in a tweet.

In the comics, Spencer Smythe created the first wave of Spider-Slayers, while his son – Alistair – would later take up that mantle in a bid to get revenge against Spider-Man and J. Jonah Jameson for the death of his father.

It remains to be seen what Smythe’s involvement will be in the film’s overall plot, but given Oscorp’s relationship with the villains of the series, I’d say it’s within reason to believe he’s a major contributor to some of the wonderful and malicious toys strewn across Oscorp.

Injecting my opinion, because that’s what I do, I have to say again that there is so much going on in this movie. As a Spider-Man fan, I’m excited at the bevy of characters and comic lore. As a movie goer, however, I fear it will be overly decorated and lack character depth and meaningful subtext. While the film looks pretty and action heavy, I can’t help but feel it’s nothing but a buildup movie for sequels and spin-offs. People criticize me for constantly saying shit like this, but you know, I really came off hating the last one (and that’s not without valid reasons). And with the over abundance of villains apparent in this film, the doubts are just forced on me. Sam Raimi had a hard enough time selling three villains in Spider-Man 3, how the heck is Webb gonna pull off four or more? Logic suggests the worst. I hope I’m wrong. I wanna be wrong. I love Spider-Man. I wanna go in as a fan and walk out as one. I just need some convincing, which I’m willing to accept.
