The shocking death of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman not only rocked the internet and cast a cloud over more than a few Super Bowl parties, it also called into question a couple of the actor’s unfinished projects. The most prominent being The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and Part 2.
Cast as Plutarch Heavensbee, the new Head Gamemaker in Catching Fire, Hoffman deftly portrayed his sly nature, keeping audiences second guessing Heavensbee’s true allegiance until the film’s final moments. Set to return for both Mockingjay Part 1 and Part 2, Hoffman was already filming (both films are shooting simultaneously) and had roughly seven days left to shoot, according to Lionsgate.
In a statement the studio said,
Philip Seymour Hoffman was a singular talent and one of the most gifted actors of our generation. We’re very fortunate that he graced our ‘Hunger Games’ family. Losing him in his prime is a tragedy, and we send our deepest condolences to Philip’s family.
For the most part, Hoffman’s role in The Hunger Games was minor, though Heavensbee became a larger presence towards of the end of Catching Fire and throughout Mockingjay. Since it appears most of Hoffman’s footage had already been filmed his untimely death will not affect the film’s release. No word if there need to be any changes made to the script in order to accommodate. If there are, they hopefully won’t greatly affect Heavenbee’s role in either film.
Losing a terrific actor like Hoffman is a terrible loss, no question. It’s wonderful knowing there’s still some of his work left to see, but two Mockingjay movies plus his other finished films, A Most Wanted Man and God’s Pocket, are no substitute for what surely would have continued to be a marvelous acting career.
The Hungers Games: Mockingjay Part 1 releases November 21 this year, Mockingjay Part 2 will release November 20, 2015.
