The CW’s new Flash pilot has filled a very important part in the form of Barry Allen’s sometimes girlfriend, and maybe his future wife, Iris West. In an exclusive casting scoop, Deadline has revealed that actress Candice Patton will play Iris in the new small screen version of The Flash, which is expected to debut sometime later this year.
Patton joins a cast that already includes Grant Gustin (Glee) as the titular hero and his police scientist alter ego Barry Allen, and Jesse L. Martin who will play Detective West, Iris’ actual father and Barry’s surrogate father. Rick Cosnett and Danielle Panabaker have also been cast in the pilot as expectant villains in waiting Detective Eddie Thawne (Professor Zoom) and Caitlin Snow (Killer Frost) respectively. You’ll recall that The Flash is being spun off from the CW’s current hit superhero show, Arrow, which introduced Gustin’s Barry Allen in a two part episode last fall; the series itself is expected to bow this coming fall. The full CW schedule will be announced in May.
As for Patton, she’s had a varied career on stage and TV so far. She’s made guest appearances on a wide variety of TV series including The Game, CSI: Miami, One Tree Hill and Entourage. According to Deadline, Iris is described as “Allen’s fast-talking, quick-witted best friend who is also the daughter of Detective West.” No word yet on whether or not she’ll really end up being from the future. (Comic continuity snobs will get that.)
Production on The Flash should get underway in the next couple of weeks, and we’ll have more news about the series as it develops.
