Being as the shows are on separate networks let’s not expect CW’s Arrow and FOX‘s Gotham to ever intermingle, but that won’t stop DC and Warner Bros. from continuing to dominate the television superhero gig. Over the weekend it was announced Ben McKenzie snagged the starring role of Jim Gordon for FOX’s new crime drama. Now four more roles have been cast, and some are extremely noteworthy.

Here’s the official scoop courtesy of Warner Bros. Television’s press release,

Robin Lord Taylor (Another Earth, Accepted, The Walking Dead) has been cast as Oswald Cobblepot (aka The Penguin). Character description: With the brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal, Oswald Cobblepot is a low-level psychopath (for gangster Fish Mooney) who hides his sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor.

Zabryna Guevara (Burn Notice, 3 lbs.) has been cast as Captain Essen. Character description: Gordon’s boss at the GCPD Homicide Squad, Captain Essen balances the two worlds of police and politics with a Machiavellian skill that’s as much corporate litigator as cop.

Sean Pertwee (Alan Partridge, Jo, Camelot, Devil’s Playground Doomsday, Event Horizon) has been cast as Alfred Pennyworth. Character description: A tough-as-nails ex-marine from East London, Alfred Pennyworth has loyally served the Waynes. Now, in the wake of their tragic deaths, he’s fiercely protective of the young Bruce Wayne.

Erin Richards (Breaking In, Being Human, Merlin) has been cast as Barbara Kean. Character description: A sophisticated emergency room doctor, Barbara is the fiancée of James Gordon, joyful but with an edge of vulnerability. She stands by her future husband…which can be difficult in a world as corrupt as Gotham.

For one, that first bit of casting – Robin Lord Taylor as Cobblepot – fits perfectly with rumors that were flying around a few weeks ago claiming the Penguin would be a villain on the show. He may not be the flippered pervert Danny Devito played in Batman Returns (thank Hera!), but he’ll be a rising power in the Gotham underworld. Cobblepot’s a great choice for a memorable Batman villain who can exist and be just as threatening in a Batman-less Gotham.

Captain Essen and Barbara Kean are familiar characters if you’re up on your Jim Gordon history. Barbara eventually becomes his wife, and it seems Gotham will take things that direction since she’s currently his fiancée. Captain Essen, or rather Sarah Essen is a fellow officer Jim has an affair with as seen in Batman: Year One. I definitely foresee relationship drama down the line for Gordon on Gotham.

Finally, Alfred Pennyworth. His inclusion was given ever since we learned a young Bruce Wayne would appear. Think they’ll stick with the canon as we saw it last in Batman Begins where it’s Gordan comforting the young Bruce after his parent’s murder?

All right, Bastards, how’s this show shaping up for ya? Any of these casting announcements getting you excited? Sound off in the comments below!

(Oh! And little bit of nerd trivia: Sean Pertwee is the son of the late, Jon Pertwee a.k.a. the Third Doctor. Now go, show off for your friends.)
