I’m not sure who I was expecting to play Kyle Reese in the new Terminator reboot (or whatever) Terminator: Genesis, but Jai Courtney (A Good Day to Die Hard) and Boyd Holbrook (Out of the Furnace) wouldn’t make the Top 2. They do however make the production’s Top 2, and I guess that’s all that counts.
Deadline broke the news that the race to play Reese is down to Courtney and Holbrook, the winner will join Arnold Schwarzenegger, Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) and Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty) who have already been cast in the film. For those of you who don’t know your Terminator lore, Kyle Reese is a soldier from the future sent back in time to protect Sarah Connor, mother of future resistance leader John Connor, from a robot assassin. Emilia is playing Sarah Connor and Jason will play John Connor. No word yet on who Ah-nuld is playing.
If we can parse the candidates for a minute, I will note that for pure acting talent, Courtney is the better bet. He was pretty great as one of the bad guys in Jack Reacher and he managed to make an impression despite the awfulness of the last Die Hard movie. As for Holbrook, he more or less fits the build of Michael Biehn who played the part of Reese in the original Terminator, but the only thing I think I’ve seen him in is The Host, and that movie was chock full of pretty boys who were completely indistinguishable from one and other. Maybe they’ll decide the winner with a coin toss.
Terminator: Genesis is currently scheduled to be in theaters on July 1, 2015.
