Gotham has added another villain to the roster with the announcement that Jada Pinkett Smith has been cast as Fish Mooney. Those of you with sharp eyes might remember that Mooney was mentioned once before in the character description of Robin Lord Taylor‘s (Accepted, The Walking Dead) character Oswald Cobblepot (aka The Penguin).

Here’s a quick recap on Cobblepot: With the brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal, Oswald Cobblepot is a low-level psychopath (for gangster Fish Mooney) who hides his sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor.

Hmm, sounds like Cobblepot and Mooney might come to blows before the whole thing finishes. The Cobblepot we all know and love doesn’t work for anyone except himself and there can only be one boss in charge after all. Here’s Warner Brothers official announcement:

We are pleased to announce that Jada Pinkett Smith (executive producer, The Queen Latifah Show; as an actor: The Matrix films, HawthoRNe, Collateral) has been cast in the series regular role of Fish Mooney in FOX and Warner Bros. Television’s one-hour drama project GOTHAM, which has a series commitment at the network.

Character description: A sadistic gangster boss and nightclub owner, Fish Mooney’s got the street smarts and almost extra-sensory abilities to read people like an open book. Imposing and hotheaded, she’s not one to be crossed.

Additional project info:

  • Based upon characters published by DC Comics, GOTHAM is a drama exploring the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon and the villains that made Gotham famous.
  • Bruno Heller (The Mentalist, Rome) wrote the pilot script and will serve as executive producer. Danny Cannon (the CSI series, Nikita) will direct and executive produce the pilot.

What do you think about this latest casting news? I’ve been looking back through her prior roles and I haven’t seen any that had her play the bad gal, usually she is the strong heroic type. It will be interesting seeing her turn her acting abilities toward the dark side.
