Lately, Marvel has been dominating the headlines. There’s been a media blitz over Guardians of the Galaxy in the wake of its trailer debut earlier in the week, and last night a short of list potential directors for the rumored Phase 3 film, Doctor Strange, began circulating. Now, less than 24 hours later, Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal) finds his name attached for the lead role in Doctor Strange.

One of Doctor Strange‘s potential directors, Nikolaj Arcel has previously worked with Mikkelsen on the film, A Royal Affair. That bit ‘o’ trivia coupled with Bleeding Cool‘s assertion a “pretty solid Marvel-adjacent source” has also linked Mikkelsen to the project has put the actor firmly in ‘rumored for Doctor Strange’ territory. He joins previously rumored leads Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Johnny Depp.

Sure, the evidence is purely circumstantial, so what? It’s a rumor, circumstantial evidence is all we ever get!

Then there’s this interesting tidbit brought to our attention by Screen Rant‘s Rob Keyes: Marvel has been interested in Mads before. Apparently, back while casting Malekith for Thor: The Dark World, Marvel’s number one choice was Mikkelsen. Due to scheduling conflicts they had to go with Christoper Eccelston instead. A real shame, because while Eccelston wasn’t terrible he also didn’t bring much to the role beyond the usual ‘destroy the universe’ trappings. What magic could Mads have brought to the role? We’ll never know.

But perhaps Mads being passed over for Malekith was truly the more fortuitous route. I mean, Doctor Strange is obviously the more prestigious gig. And it’s a role Mikkelsen could step in to quite easily. Judging from his past work on Hannibal and as the villain in Casino Royale, Mikkelsen brings a sense of foreboding and arrogance to his performances. He’s intimidating! And that’s exactly what’s needed for the egotistical, Doctor Strange.

While Doctor Strange is all but confirmed for Phase 3, Marvel has been mum on saying anything official yet. (Though Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige has basically already told us, flat out, a Doctor Strange movie is on the way.) Is Mikkelsen someone you’d like to see as the Supreme Sorcerer?
