If Adam Driver thought that being the on-again/off-again flame of the main character in the HBO hit series Girls was a star-maker, just wait until he ascends to the actual stars. After months of speculation, guess work, lies, inneuendo and some damn fine manipulations of the Ouija board, Driver is close to being the first, official cast member of J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars Episode VII.
According to the Hollywood trade paper Variety, Driver is very close to signing a deal with Disney and Lucasfilm to join Episode VII as the main villain. Driver’s name has been in the mix for the film’s cast for some time (but then again, name a hot, Hollywood actor who hasn’t), but for all concerned, Driver had become the top choice for the Episode VII’s bad guy for the last couple of weeks. No word on who, what, or huh, but sources say that Driver’s character will be “in the vein of iconic Star Wars villain Darth Vader.” That’s a little like saying someone’s in the vein of Jesus, but hyperbole’s part of the game.
So what’s the hold-up? Scheduling concerns. Driver has a commitment to film the fourth season of Girls and there was apparently some overlap with the schedule for Episode VII. Sources say that’s been mostly worked out now, and all that’s left is to dot the i’s and cross the t’s. The studio had no comment on the casting news (yet), but Variety contends that there will be a done deal in the next couple of days with more casting news to come soon as Episode VII inches closer to its April start date for principal photography at Pinewood Studios.
If nothing else, at least this officially douses those “Adam Driver as Nightwing” rumors from last year.
We’ll have more news as it develops. Star Wars Episode VII is scheduled to be released December 18, 2015.
