The Batman vs. Superman movie certainly has a knack for making the Internet blow up, and the most recent case of that was their bombshell casting of Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. It’s no secret how the fans reacted to the news, but what do Luthors of the past think of Eisenberg taking up the mantel of Superman’s nemesis?
It probably won’t come as much of a surprise, but they have roughly the same positive response that we heard when former Batmen were asked about Affleck taking over that role. When Smallville‘s Michael Rosenbaum– who was campaigning for the spot of Luthor in the film himself- was asked about the casting, he made it clear that Eisenberg would have to make it his own for it to work.
First off, I think he’s a really good actor. I don’t think he needs any advice from me, he’ll do his homework. Do it your way. I’m sure Zack [Snyder] has an idea. He cast you for reason. Jesse’s a good actor. He’ll do it his own way and that’s the best way. If you can do it your way, if you succeed or fail, you succeed because you are being original. If you’re trying to emulate someone, you’ll always be compared. That’s why I didn’t want to be compared during Smallville. I didn’t watch any of Gene Hackman as Lex. He’ll be fantastic. Great actor, no problem with it.
Kevin Spacey, who played the role in Superman Returns, had much of the same to say, citing Eisenberg’s talents as an actor for the foreseen success.
First of all, I think [Jesse Eisenberg] is a remarkable actor. He’s just going to [frick]ing own it. I think it’s a great idea and I wish him the best with it.
So, there you have it. Two previous Lex Luthors have signed off on the casting, and seem fairly confident that he’ll be a huge success. While I don’t think fans doubt that Jesse Eisenberg is a great actor, I do think that it’s more along the lines of why Seth Green doesn’t like Ben Affleck as Batman, in that Eisenberg is just too hard to buy in the role as it’s been described.
What do you think? Do you agree with Spacey and Rosenbaum about Eisenberg being perfect for the role? Let us know!
The tentatively titled Batman Vs. Superman is due in theaters on May 6th, 2016.
