Thank you for clicking this article. I know that the subject of Gal Gadot playing Wonder Woman in the upcoming Man of Steel sequel is a sensitive one, and is somehow more sensitive than when Ben Affleck was cast as Batman for the movie. Anyway, despite Gadot’s somewhat public appeal to convince over-anxious fanboys that she’s working hard to work out, I suspect she’s not going to win anyone over till the credits roll on Batman Vs Superman, or whatever it’s called.
But now time for a serious question: what is Wonder Woman going to wear? Oscar-nominated costume designer Michael Wilkinson (American Hustle) took time out of his Oscar weekend to talk about his work on the upcoming superhero movie, particularly in regard to Wonder Woman’s outfit.
“It’s so important to get her right,” said Wilkinson. “She really deserves to be presented on-screen in her full glory. So what I do is I look at the history of how the character has been presented on the big-screen, and the small-screen, and in comic books, and graphic novels. We process it all. Then we kind of put that aside and work out what is right for our film, for the cinematic universe that our director Zack Snyder is putting together. We try and create a Wonder Woman that’s relevant for today’s audiences.”
So what does that mean? It’s one of those non-answers we get when a big movie is in development, but one does wonder whether or not Wilkinson and Co. will be doing any updating, or whether Wonder Woman will be wearing her traditional one piece in the film. But can you fight crime properly in what Wonder Woman wears in the comics?
“Absolutely!” said Wilkinson. “I mean, you just have to look at the gladiators from ancient Rome, they did their thing in little loin clothes and shield….It works for Thor, it works for 300, so let’s see what happens.”
I don’t remember anyone in Thor fighting crime in a bathing suit, but it’s been a while since I’ve seen The Dark World, so… Anyway, you can listen to Wilkinson for yourself in the YouTube clip below.
The Man of Steel sequel, AKA: Batman Vs Superman, will be in theaters in the summer of 2016.
