While Tim Burton will, sadly, not be returning to helm the sequel to his 2010 Alice in Wonderland adaptation, according to Variety: Helena Bonham Carter is in negotiations to reprise her role as The Red Queen. Johnny Depp will also return as The Mad Hatter–making this possibly the only time Carter and Depp have been in a movie together without Tim Burton directing.
The sequel, entitled Through The Looking Glass, will be directed by Muppets Most Wanted’s James Bobin. Mia Wasikowska (whom I loved in the role, and really wish would get more work) will return as Alice, and Sacha Baron Cohen is apparently in talks to play the film’s main villain–though no plot or character details (beyond the characters we already know) have been released as of yet.
Most likely, the sequel will be based on Lewis Carroll’s book of the same name, which tells the story of Alice’s journey to a parallel universe she enters via a large mirror hanging above her fireplace–though how faithful to the source material this film will be is still unknown.
Also unknown is the status of such co-stars as Anne Hathaway and Alan Rickman. We still don’t even know if their characters will appear in the sequel–much less if the actors will be returning.
I leave you with this video of the exhaustive makeup process Carter had to endure every day when first she portrayed The Red Queen. She must have really enjoyed this role (or was offered a hefty raise) to agree to go through this ordeal again:
