*Update: Did Warner Brothers Just Blink on Head to Head Release Date With Marvel?!? – Marvel Stands Ground on ‘Batman VS Superman’ Release Date
It caught many fans flat-footed when Warner Brothers unexpectedly shifted Zach Snyder‘s Batman vs Superman release date 10 months to May 6th, 2016. Marvel quickly snagged the open spot left by Warner Brothers and moved up the release date for Edgar Wright‘s Ant-Man. While fans also expected Marvel to announce a change in the release date for the as yet unnamed Marvel Phase Three movie that was already slotted for May 6th, 2016, Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige doesn’t plan to budge and recently drew a line in the sand about the date.
The Brazilian movie website Judao is reporting that WB’s Brazilian distribution reps have pulled Batman VS Superman forward one week, to April 28th in Brazil, and the 29th in the US.
If true then WB just blinked big time in the great battle of release dates. They blinked in the face of an UN-NAMED MARVEL MOVIE. WB moved their big tent-pole movie and obviously expected Marvel to buckle and change their plans for the date. Marvel kicked back and Warner Brother decided to pick up their ball and go home.
If Warner Brothers doesn’t think that Batman and Superman, the two biggest tent poles in the world of DC Comic movie franchises, can’t stand up to an un-named Marvel movie, why would fans?
What do you think?
When /Film asked about the possible date change Feige said:
We’re certainly keeping the date there and we’ll announce what that movie is, I assume, in the next few months.
When asked whether the Phase Three movie titles would be announced during this years SDCC Feige said:
That would be great, I’d love nothing more than to be able to announce them all there. But if it’s ready beforehand, we’ll probably do it beforehand. If it’s not ready then, we’ll do it after.
IGN also had the opportunity to ask Feige about the subject and got this response:
We’re still on that date and we’re going to be announcing soon what the movie will be on that date. That’s what we’re sort of actively working on as we get ready to firm up and get into pre-production what will be the two films for ’16 and the two films for ’17.
It’s not about the best time to make an announcement for us. It’s about when the team coalesces and when we find a group of collaborators that we want to spend the next two or three years with to bring one of the movies to life.
Everyone has their thoughts on which Phase Three movie will get that spot with Guardians of the Galaxy II and Doctor Strange heading most people’s list.
Many studios do end up working together when it comes to release dates, but this time it looks like Warner Brothers didn’t bother to test the waters over at Marvel Studios about the date change. If nothing changes, it will be very interesting to see which movie comes out on top, both for the opening weekend and overall box office returns.
What do you think? Which of the Marvel movies that we know about could stand up to Batman vs Superman?
