When you look at the amazing talent involved in Guardians of the Galaxy, and you see the staggering list of actors who have roles in the film, it’s a real shock when you realize that two of Hollywood’s biggest names are merely voicing a raccoon and a tree. So, one has to wonder, what is it that drew a name like Vin Diesel into a role which only has him say “I am Groot“?
Apparently, it was just that. When asked about his interest in playing “a character that’s a tree and says only three words,” the Fast 6 star responded, “I’m in.”
On why he was so interested in the role, Diesel explained,
How they were able to reinforce the theme, the meaning and the message of the whole movie in one line of character dialogue impressed me. And how that line translates in the third act is really going to be something that allows the audience to feel like they are part of this world and understand the stakes a what the characters are going through.
We’ve heard a lot of talk about this, and director James Gunn claimed that even he was astounded by Vin’s performance, saying “I never knew someone could say I AM GROOT so many different ways and with such feeling.” Unfortunately, we haven’t gotten to hear the tree-man speak yet, but I’m interested to see what all the fuss is about. From what little we’ve seen, I’m obligated to believe Gunn when he says, “his story breaks your heart.”
Are you eagerly waiting to see what Vin Diesel has done in the role of Groot, or are you happy just getting to watch he and Rocket go on a rampage? Let us know!
