Of all the mutants shoe-horned into the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past, it felt like director Bryan Singer might have forgotten a couple of fan-favorites. If you are a Nightcrawler or Gambit fan, you might have been left thinking that Singer was slapping you in the face, especially since both the German teleporter and the Cajun card-tosser have both appeared in previous X-Men films. But no offense was indented, and now, according to the director himself, their may be room for both Nightcrawler and Gambit in the next X-Men film, 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse.

While talking to Cine Premiere, Singer name dropped the two mutants as potential characters for the upcoming sixth X-Men movie.”I’m considering Gambit and potentially a young Nightcrawler for Apocalypse,” Singer said to the Spanish magazine. “I was going to have Nightcrawler [in Days of Future Past] and even wrote a scene, but I felt that we were forcing too many mutants into the story.”

That’s too bad because Alan Cumming was really great in the part in X2: X-Men United, and it was something of a disappointment that Cumming wasn’t able, or wasn’t invited, to come back for X-Men: The Last Stand. What we know about Apocalypse so far is that it will likely be more focused on the First Class cast members rather than the original trilogy actors, which would mean that a younger (read: re-cast) Nightcrawler would make sense.

As for Gambit, he was played by Taylor Kitsch in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and since that story takes place at an indeterminate point before the first X-Men movie, it is possible that Kitsch could be invited back to play Gambit in Apocalypse. But would fans want him back though? That’s the rub, especially since the first Wolverine isn’t exactly thought of with a lot of fondness. However, that’s not to say it’s impossible, Ryan Reynolds keeps talking about playing Deadpool again after all.

What do you Bastards think? Eager for more Gambit and Nightcrawler? And if so who should play them? Sound off below.
