It’s no new thing that super hero viewing audiences are eager to see one of the industry camps finally break down and put a female hero in control of her own solo flick. And while the obvious choice for this to many is the almighty Wonder Woman, another name has been rotating through the press circles as a likely potential – The Black Widow. She has more screen time than any other female character and would make a great choice, but the powers-that-be have been hedging back and forth on this one. Now, the actress that plays Widow in the Marvel/Disney franchise universe, Scarlett Johansson, has stepped up and said that she wants to see it happen.
While at the London premiere for Captain America: The Winter Solider, Johansson stated that as long as the audiences would want to see it, she’s willing to do it. Or, in her own words:
“If you want to see a Black Widow spin-off movie, then I want to see it. We’ll see. We will put the request into Marvel tomorrow.”
Yeah, somehow I don’t think Johansson’s “request” (assuming she wasn’t just being snarky) will count for much when it comes to what new flicks the overlord Kevin Feige decides to green-light.
So far, the rumormill has been working overtime with regards to the possibility of a Black Widow solo flick, from hinting that it may already be on the list of things to do, to suggesting that it’s going to happen but they have no idea when, to finally hedging away and throwing out the name of Captain Marvel as Marvel’s first potential female-led movie.
Sorry folks, just because Johansson is willing to sign on the dotted line doesn’t mean anything’s going to happen. All we can do is wait and see when Marvel finally decides to make some sort of official announcements concerning the Phase 3 list.
