Part of the fun of Joss Whedon‘s adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing was seeing the Whedon repertory players – gathered from BuffyAngel, FireflyDollhouse and The Avengers – put on a Shakespeare play. Whedon breeds a lot of loyalty, and that’s extended to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. right from the start with J. August Richards in the role we’ve come to know as Deathlok, for example. Now comes news that one of Richards’ co-stars from Angel is joining the show, and they have a mysterious, and potentially spoilery, connection to Coulson’s past.

So you remember talk of this cellist that Coulson was romantically involved with before the events of The Avengers, right? Well, her name, as it turns out, is Audrey, and she looks a lot like Amy Acker. TV Guide is reporting that Whedon has recruited Acker of Angel and Dollhouse fame to play the integral part of the woman good ole Phil left behind when he died during the events of The Avengers and was resurrected prior to the beginning of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

There’s no word on whether or not Acker will be making a one-time only appearance, or be doing something more recurring, but for those hoping for the latter, you’ll be disappointed to know that the actress already has a day job as a regular on CBS’ Person of Interest*. You may not think that’s a big deal, but there is the small fact that POI shoots in New York, and S.H.I.E.L.D. shoots in California, making moonlighting rather difficult.

(*Incidentally, you may curse the name of CBS and its “old peoples” programming, but if you haven’t before, Person of Interest is well worth checking out. Acker plays “Root,” a computer hacker who’s become the “analog interface” for the series’ sentient computer program, a machine that looks for trouble or those being troubled. Acker both literally and figuratively kicks ass on the show.)

The as-yet untitled episode featuring Acker will air April 22. Stay tuned for more S.H.I.E.L.D. news.
