As if the powers-that-be haven’t done enough evil things in their lives, now they’re looking to reboot a franchise that not only does not need one, but one that will be functionally destroyed by the very idea of bringing in a new cast. Yes folks, Police Academy – The Rebootening is on its way. And you have the comedic team of Key & Peele to thank for it.
If you don’t know of Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, they’re the masterminds behind a Comedy Central-based sketch show known as – duh – Key & Peele. They also made their way through (cringe) MADtv. Now they’re putting out their cash to produce the Police Academy reboot. Also joining them will be Paul Maslansky, one of the producers from the original series. The possibility of the project has been floating around since 2010, but delays and people fleeing for their lives have kept it from going forward. At least until now.
If you’re unaware of what the Police Academy franchise is… well, there’s nothing I can do to help you. You fail at life in a big way. Of course, whether you actually liked the films or not is another story entirely. They did go way downhill after the second installment, after all. But they’ll fix all this with a reboot, right? I’d have to say – Not bloody likely.
What say the Nerd Readers? Do you think these two might be able to bring new life to the dead franchise? Or is a Police Academy reboot about the worst idea ever conceived of?
