As a lifelong fan of Ghostbusters I’ve been really, really hesitant about Ghostbusters 3. However, even I got excited when news hit that LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were in talks to direct the long-in-development sequel. Now only have Lord and Miller given us The LEGO Movie but also 21 Jump Street, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs and the beloved MTV cult classic Clone High. These geniuses directing Ghostbusters 3? Throw caution to the wind and count me in.
Well, not so fast.
Variety reporter Jeff Sneider is saying that Lord and Miller are no longer attached to the project. His tweet:
Hearing LORD & MILLER ended up walking away from GHOSTBUSTERS 3 job. They were the studio’s choice but wanted to keep their options open…

“Walking away”? “Keeping their options open”? What the Hell happened here? Lord and Miller’s involvement injected some much needed intrigue and energy into the production. People were actually getting excited for this thing after all these years. So what caused the two guys to get up and go? Well, we just don’t know yet but it doesn’t bode well for the film.
So Ghostbusters 3 doesn’t have Bill Murray or Ivan Reitman or the late Harold Ramis. It’s pretty much just running on hope and dreams at this point. While the film might find a capable team to direct, it’s hard to see anyone coming close to the youthful, hilarious energy of Lord and Miller. These guys were just what Ghostbusters 3 (and its fans) needed. This is a major, disappointing setback.
