It’s been in development for a while, though until now the 12 Monkeys television reimagining has been without a definite home. SyFy ordered a pilot for the show back in August of 2013, and now, though some may consider this to be one of the worst ideas ever, this Terry Gilliam-inspired series will, whether you like it or not, be making its way to SyFy in full series format.
Yes, SyFy has made it official. There will be 12 episodes of 12 Monkeys (go figure) and they’ll be showing up in January of 2015. It is, as expected, based off of Terry Gilliam’s creation and will follow much the same storyline. So expect a time-traveling guy from a dystopian future trying to figure out how to stop the plague that will eventually destroy all humanity. Whether we’ll see the same strange and intriguing Gilliam-esque stylization, however, remains to be seen.
Aaron Stanford (Nikita) will be taking on the role of James Cole (formerly played by Bruce Willis), and he will be joined by Amanda Schull (Pretty Little Liars) as Cassandra Railly (presumably the TV version of Madeleine Stowe’s Kathryn Railly), Noah Bean (Nikita) as a character named Aaron and Kirk Acevedo (Fringe) as someone called Ramse. The production showrunner is Natalie Chaidez (V) and the pilot was directed by Jeffrey Reiner (Friday Night Lights) from a script put together by Travis Fickett (Nikita, Terra Nova) and Terry Matalas (also Nikita and Terra Nova).
All-in-all, it looks like a bit of a Nikita reunion. Now I’m wishing I had watched that show just to see if this is indeed a skilled crew or not. Gilliam’s 12 Monkeys is one of my all-time favorite sci-fi flicks and, though I’m pretty sure I’ll hate the series purely on principle, it would still be nice to perhaps have some hope.
What say thee, Nerd Readers? Good idea, bad idea? Is there a possibility that a 12 Monkeys TV show won’t suck? Is this the right crew to make it happen?
