…Batgirl! Kidding. (Hopefully.) The recent announcement that the Academy Award-winning actress Holly Hunter was joining the cast of the Man of Steel sequel (AKA: Batman Vs Superman) understandably dredged up the curiosity of fans wondering who the venerable Hunter might be playing in the comic book movie. One website thinks it has the answer, and if they’re right, then it’s an intriguing bit of detail from Batman lore for the filmmakers to include. Who are we talking about? Well, keeping in mind it’s only a rumor, read on to learn the answer.
According to Latino Review, Hunter has been cast to play a significant figure from Bruce Wayne’s past: “Leslie Thompkins, or a Leslie Thompkins replacement character,” says the website.
Leslie Thompkins is a colleague of Thomas Wayne who helps raise Bruce after the untimely death of his parents. A doctor dedicated to helping Gotham City’s poor and needy, Thompkins is also one of the few people privy to the information that Bruce Wayne and Batman are one and the same. Although she doesn’t approve of his vigilantism, Thompkins does occasionally give Batman moral or medical support. If the Hunter role is Thompkins, or Thompkins-like, it will the first time the character’s been portrayed in a live-action Bat-story, although she was a regular fixture on Batman: The Animated Series, voiced by Diana Muldaur (AKA: Dr. Pulaski from Star Trek: The Next Generation).
If they’re casting Thompkins then I have to say that they’re digging pretty deep into Batman’s origins for what’s supposed to be a Superman movie that also features Wonder Woman. It would be interesting to see Leslie Thompkins in the flesh on the big screen, but I advise that nerds take this rumor with a grain of salt.
We’ll have more news on the film as it develops. Batman Vs Superman is in theaters May 6, 2016.
