For those who don’t know, How To Train Your Dragon was actually a damn fine animated film that surprised the heck out of me. Solid action, actual heart and gorgeous visuals, it’s still head-and-shoulders above most animated fare. Not surprisingly, many people are ready for the sequel. Even full grown men like myself who shouldn’t be so giddy for an animated film.
Well, a new trailer for How To Train Your Dragon 2 is here and it promises just as much excitement, adventure and fire-breathing fun as the first one.
The sequel finds out hero Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) meeting his mother and a whole new group of dragons. But all is not well as it becomes clear that a new danger to humans and their winged pets is on the horizon. Now Hiccup and his clan must “save the future of men and dragons from the power-hungry Drago.” Of course the villain’s name is Drago. You never name a good person Drago.
Despite some annoying song choices, the trailer looks just as visually stunning as we’d expect. Plus the story seems interesting, especially the drama with Hiccup’s mom (why did she leave? Will she come back?). And while the gags are a little childish (understandable) I can get behind catapulting sheep.
Dreamworks says this is the second film in a trilogy so I hope the mythology deepens and there’s a great set-up for the third and final film. Like I said, this is an animated film to get excited for.
How To Train Your Dragon 2 flies (get it? Like a dragon?) into theaters on June 13.
