Quickly, list all the actors rumored for Star Wars: Episode VII. You can’t, can you? That’s because the list of performers who maybe, possibly, might be in J.J. Abrams’s ridiculously-anticipated film is too long to remember.
However, one of the more memorable names reportedly tied to the movie has just confirmed he won’t be in it. That’s right, Benedict Cumberbatch isn’t going to a galaxy far, far away.
Speaking at Oz Comic-Con, Cumberbatch made it plain and simple:
“I would’ve liked a part in JJ’s new Star Wars but it won’t happen sadly.”
Finally, some definitive news regarding Star Wars casting!
Cumberbatch’s (amazing) name has long been one of the ones linked to the project. Many said he would be playing a villain, a brand new Sith lord who would be the primary bad guy. Others said he would be playing one of the protagonists. Then others said…well, nothing, because nobody really knows anything about this movie. The only character we know will definitely be in it is R2-D2.
With Cumberbatch not starring, speculation can turn to the myriad other actors whispered about: Adam Driver, Jesse Plemons, Lupita Nyong’o, and more…and more…and more. Maybe we will never know the cast until opening day. That would be kind of cool, right?
Episode VII is expected to begin filming soon (if it’s not already) so you would assume that someday – maybe someday soon – we will get actual news regarding who’s in the movie. May 4th is right around the corner and it holds a special place for most Star Wars fans. Hmm, maybe that will be the day.
