When Joss Whedon isn’t finding new and even more horrific ways to kill off his most likeable characters, he’s finding ways to entangle them romantically: Buffy and Angel, Buffy and Spike, Wesley and Fred, Zoe and Wash (R.I.P.), Mal and Inara, Simon and Kaylee, Jayne and Vera….you get the picture.
Ergo, it’s not surprising that one day he might write a straight-up romance–with a preternatural twist, naturally, this IS Whedon we’re talking about: Thus, we have In Your Eyes. And Nerd Bastards has the first 3 minutes of the Brin Hill-directed film–you guessed it–after the jump:
In Your Eyes stars Zoe Kazan of Ruby Sparks and Michael Stahl-David of Cloverfield as “star-crossed lovers” Rebecca and Dylan–a couple with seemingly no common ground, save for a number of shared supernatural experiences as children.
And that’s where the clip finds our lead characters. Entertainment Weekly has released this 3 minute video in advance of the film’s premiere at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival this Sunday. It depicts Rebecca (Kiera Gruttadauria) and Dylan (Alexander Kravec) as children, and establishes that they grew up nowhere near each other: Dylan’s world is sunny and temperate, while Rebecca apparently grew up on the ice planet Hoth (or maybe Canada).
We learn that Dylan can see through Rebecca’s eyes–and presumably she can see through his (hence the title).
From what we can infer from the clip, Dylan started out as a smart kid who’s hanging out with some bad influences. By the time we meet him again–all grown up–he is:
an ex-con struggling to make a fresh start in New Mexico
While young Rebecca, whom we know little about save for her affinity for sledding, grows into:
a soft-spoken doctor’s wife living on the East Coast
The surface impression is of a rather formulaic, semi-metaphysical romantic drama that will need to rely primarily on the strength of its writing and performances if it wants to rise above the throng.
Whedon, for his part, seems (unsurprisingly) enthusiastic about the film:
When I wrote ’In Your Eyes’, I didn’t have the wherewithal (or the moxie) to make it without an established production house. I believe, as I did then, that it’s a pretty timeless romance, and now, with the creation of Bellwether Pictures (and Brin Hill’s elegant, passionate take on the piece), I have the opportunity to prove it. (I also have a 37% increase in moxie.) I love this team and I can’t wait to see them bring ‘In Your Eyes’ to life
In Your Eyes is directed by Won’t Back Down writer Brin Hill and executive produced by Whedon. The movie also stars Jennifer Grey and Nikki Reed.
As previously stated, In Your Eyes will premiere Sunday, April 20th, at Tribeca.

PS: Am I the only one who’s gonna be galactically disappointed if the Peter Gabriel song isn’t at least in the trailers?
