Goonies never say die! And apparently neither do Goonie directors. A couple of weeks ago, the news broke that a sequel was in the works nearly 30 years after the release of the original, and although fans might have been excited by the news, the were understandably skeptical. But if you anyone could get The Goonies back together again after three decades it’s original film director Richard Donner, and in a recent, albeit, impromptu interview, Donner let loose several clues that seemed to confirm that Goonies 2 is happening, and that it goes all the way to the top.
TMZ, in one of their trademarked drive-by interview pieces, cornered Donner and peppered him with questions concerning Goonies 2 like it was a game show version of a congressional hearing. Amongst the sound bites they got from Donner includes his belief that he can recruit Josh Brolin back for the film along with most, if not all, of the original cast, and that the idea for this proposed sequel comes from no less than Steven Spielberg himself. Spielberg, of course, was the producer of the first film, and according to some, the co-director, so if anyone’s in a position to get this off the ground it’s Spielberg. Listen to what Donner had to say for yourself in the embedded video below:
So is it going to happen? Corey Feldman once famously said (in 2008), “NO! There is no Goonies 2! I’m sorry but it’s just not gonna happen…. Course now that I’ve said that, they’ll do it.” It’s starting to look like he was right, doesn’t it?
We’ll have more news about Goonies 2 as it develops.
