For all those Veronica Mars fans that were giddy when the long-cancelled television series finally got its chance to hit the big screen, we’ve got some good news. It looks like the powers-that-be have begun to see the dollar potential in this old property. They’re not renewing the show, nor is there any word on whether the movie will end up getting a sequel. What they are doing, however, is producing a spin-off series via the CW.
Titled Play It Again, Dick, the new series is being put together by original Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas. He will produce as well as acting as one of the writers on the show. But this won’t be a simple case of spreading out within the already established Veronica Mars universe. The new series will be a bit… different.
Ryan Hansen will be playing himself. Yes, Hansen will be acting as Hansen. The premise of the show is that Hansen, in the wake of Veronica Mars going off the air, tries his best to get his character, Dick Casablancas, his own spin-off show. Along the way, he runs into former VM cast members and crew.
According to the official press release:
PLAY IT AGAIN, DICK stars Ryan Hansen as himself, as he begs, cajoles, and pleads with his former “Veronica Mars” castmates and friends to help him get his character, Dick Casablancas, his own spin-off show. PLAY IT AGAIN, DICK is co-written and executive produced by Rob Thomas, the creator and executive producer of “Veronica Mars,” and will include guest appearances by some of Hansen’s fellow “Veronica Mars” stars.
I can’t say I’m the best person to talk to when it comes to all-things Veronica Mars. So what say thee, Nerd Readers? Is this a good idea? Is Dick Casablancas the perfect character to get his own show? How do you feel about the meta approach? Or is this just a case of the CW trying to cash in on Veronica Mars’ recent resurgence in popularity?
