ABC‘s Galavant just might be one of those magical shows that, while it sounds incredibly stupid, ends up being fantastically entertaining. What changed my mind from first reading the headline to writing this post? This trailer.
I had serious doubts when I first read this mornings in-house suggestions for today’s Nerdbastards posts, it looked like another slow news day. When I saw musical/fantasy/comedy in the description of Galavant, my mind went immediately to Steven Bocho‘s fiasco of a musical television show Cop Rock. What a train wreck that was.
So you can imagine my state of mind when I clicked through to check out Galavant‘s trailer. Suddenly, I found myself warming to the idea, then I could feel my face breaking into a smile. This mix of Princess Bride, Glee, and Your Highness is intoxicating fun and if the show manages to capture the best of each, then it might just make it.
The show stars Joshua Sasse (Frankenstein’s Army, Rogue) as Galavant:
With Timothy Omundson (Psych, Jericho) as the evil king Richard and Mallory Jansen as Galavant’s lost love.
Galavant is the brainchild of screenwriter and executive producer Dan Fogelman (Crazy, Stupid, Love, Tangled, Cars) along with the award-winning musical pair: composer Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast) and lyricist Glenn Slater (The Little Mermaid, Tangled).
