The Internet has been on a slow boil the last couple of weeks as the whispers became rumors that morphed into talks and now have fully blossomed into confirmation that Robert Orci will direct the third Star Trek movie. Should you be worried?
Orci has produced and written a ton of movies and television shows and while this will be his maiden directing gig, he’s been a part of the movie making process for so long he must have picked up a thing or two about directing from the likes of J.J. Abrams, Gavin Hood, and Jon Favreau.
Orci has been such a big part of the reboot of the Star Trek franchise that this move by Paramount does make some sense. Abrams will be busy with Star Wars VII and will only carry a producer role on Star Trek III, you can bet that he’ll have considerable influence on the tone and direction the movie takes.
The film is still in the scripting stage with Orci writing the story with scripting newbies J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay. There are no plot details but most expect the Klingon/Federation Cold War plot line to continue in this third installment.
One interesting thing to note is that Orci and longtime writing partner Alex Kurztman recently called it quits on their partnership in the movie making business, while still maintaining their television production company K/O Paper Products. Sources say that both are interested in directing movies and that going solo would be in the best interest of both parties.
What do you think of this Orci’s landing this directing job?
More importantly, where do you want to see Star Trek III take us?
