From the “remakes no one asked for” file, comes news tonight that Edgar Ramirez is replacing Gerard Butler in the remake of the 90s surfer heist movie Point Break. Ramierez will star along side Luke Bracey in this new version of the film about disenfranchised surfers robbing banks to flip the bird to the system, and the lone, conflicted FBI agent, improbably named Johnny Utah, who’s not sure he wants to bring them to justice.
Ramirez is an accomplished character actor who last appeared in Ridley Scott’s The Counselor, but he’s also had parts in Zero Dark Thirty, Wrath of the Titans and The Bourne Ultimatum. According to Screen Daily, in Point Break he’ll play Bodhi, Patrick Swayze‘s role in the original film directed by Academy Award-winner Kathryn Bigelow, while Bracey will play the Keanu Reeves role Johnny Utah. Where have you seen Bracey before? He played Cobra Commander in G.I. Joe: Retaliation.
Also joining the cast is Clemens Schick (Casino Royale) who presumably will be playing one of the Ex-Presidents, the band robbing team led by Bodhi. Ericson Core, noted cinematographer of the first Fast and the Furious movie and Daredevil, will be directing from a script by Kurt Wimmer, who wrote the Total Recall remake screenplay. So this is an all-star effort all around.
Apparently, the producers are aiming for a 2015 release, so move over Avengers, here come some bank robbing surfers!
We’ll have more news as it might probably develop.
