No, that’s still technically the black and white image of Ben Affleck wearing what will reportedly be the new cinematic batsuit that Zack Snyder released last week. It’s just been colorized to give us an idea of the suit as Kevin Smith claims it appears.
Way back last November, Smith said on his podcast that he had seen the Affleck batsuit, and he was barely able to contain his pure fanboy enthusiasm:
You have not seen this costume in a movie, on film before For a comic book fan, it was mind-bending.
But when Snyder released the above photo, many fans remarked that it doesn’t seem significantly different from past movie batsuits, leading Smith to clarify the situation on his podcast:
As you may remember, I saw a photo of the Batsuit many months ago, and many people asked online, ‘Is that the picture you saw?’ No, that is a very cool picture, but that is not the picture I saw….They put it on a fake rooftop, and they lit it up. But it was in color, and you could see every piece of detail. So I’ve seen some people online go, ‘Why is this fucking suit any different than the Chris Nolan Batsuit, it’s all one fucking color.’ It’s like, ‘Dude, that’s a monochrome photo. You know what that means, one chrome.
That’s not a representation of what the suit looks like. So what the suit looks like, and I was always kind of keeping it quiet until they revealed it, but they’ve revealed it. And you can kind of see, and anybody that…you’ve seen some people take the picture and color it online. If you want to see what this fucking suit looks like, you just go to Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, go to the third book, Hunt the Dark Knight…it’s the exact fucking outfit he’s wearing. That’s why I hugged that guy all those months ago.
For clarity’s sake, here is the image Smith is referring to:
Now, is he claiming the Snyder photo is NOT the suit he saw? It’s hard to say. The picture DOES resemble the Miller batsuit in some ways….
But then Smith threw us a tantalizing thought:
I will put this to you. What if it’s one of a few Batmobiles? What if that’s one of a few outfits in the movie? I suspect that’s the case.
Does Smith know more than he’s saying? Or is this just “blue skying”, so to speak?
We’ll keep a close eye on Mr. Smith, and see what other secrets he has to share…
The as yet untitled sequel to Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, popularly known as “Batman vs. Superman”, is scheduled to open May 6, 2016.
