J.J. Abrams has made a big announcement from the Star Wars: Episode VII Abu Dhabi set. Disney, Lucasfilm, and Abrams production company, Bad Robot have introduced a new charitable initiative for UNICEF, Star Wars: Force for Change, that gives Star Wars fans a chance to appear in Star Wars: Episode VII!

Check out the video announcement and then check out the details below.

Let’s start with where your money would go. At the end of the announcement, Abrams links to the campaign which is being run by Omaze, the same folks that ran the charitable contest that offered the chance to ride in a tank with Arnold Schwarzenegger earlier this year. Abrams says:

The money earned through the campaign will go to UNICEF’s Innovation Lab.

UNICEF’s Innovation Labs describes itself as:

Children and their families around the world face various barriers to fulfilling their rights – particularly in resource-limited settings. UNICEF and its partners work to overcome these challenges. Through this website, we encourage dialogue and co-development to support the successful delivery of end-user driven and innovative services, products and systems.

You can look over some of UNICEF’s Innovation Lab’s current projects using this link. They focus on the infrastructure and equipment needed to help children across the world in countries that don’t have those basic resources using technology and innovation. Something as simple as refrigeration for vaccines can change thousands of children’s lives.

Now let’s look at what you get for your donation. It’s a sliding scale of Star Wars fun. The donations start at $10 dollars and finish with $50,000:

Don’t worry, there are a bunch of donation levels with great rewards in between those two extremes. There are T-Shirts, VIP Tours, Light Saber hilts, Signed Scripts, and other memorabilia, lots of fun stuff for Star Wars fans.

Those that contribute $10 are entered into the contest to be flown to London, go through makeup, costuming, and appear in Star Wars VII. As people donate at higher levels, they receive an additional entry in the Cameo contest, increasing their chances.

This is a great way for Star Wars fans to contribute to a worthy cause while tickling their Star Wars fancy. So get over there, contribute, and grab your chance to appear in Star Wars VII.
