x-men-days-of-future-past-end-credit-scene

The long, arduous wait through a film’s insanely lengthy credits for a small tease of what’s coming in a franchise’s next installment has become synonymous with the big summer blockbuster. Almost every movie offers something after or in between their credits nowadays, either a teaser or a last laugh, and when they don’t? Well, you better believe there’s usually at least a dozen disappointed movie-goers grumbling about sitting around for nothing.

After watching X-Men: Days of Future Past‘s end credit scene, however, I’m betting more than a few in the audience were saying, “What the eff was that about!?” [SPOILERS, duh.]

Last warning, this post will contain SPOILERS for X-Men: Days of Future Past. If you haven’t seen the film, turn back now.

All right, so after the credits rolled on DOFP the film takes us to Ancient Egypt, some 5,000 years prior to anything we’ve just been watching. A hooded figure stands with his back to us on a mountainside, below him a large crowd has gathered. As the camera pulls back we can see giant stones moving through the air as it appears the hooded figure is constructing a pyramid with telekinesis. The crowd is genuflecting and chanting a name: En Sabah Nur. The camera moves and pans around, revealing the hooded figure: a slender man with grey skin and blue lips. Behind him we see four horseman standing guard.

Yeah, how is that pyramid building going, En Sabah Nur? Or should I say, APOCALYPSE.

Yup, if you yourself nor any of your friends are walking comic book encyclopedias you may not have put it together that the mutant teased in this end credit scene is the megalomaniac tyrant, Apocalypse. And even if you did – seeing as those four horsemen were a big clue as is the title of the next film, X-Men: Apocalypse you might still have absolutely no idea who Apocalypse is or why the X-Men have every reason to be terrified of him.

Screen Rant’s Ben Kendrick has written up a great primer on the character, detailing his origins, his powers, and some speculation on how this big bad may fit in to the X-Men movie universe. Definitely check it out if you want to be able hold your own in any Apocalypse-related arguments at the comic shop next time you’re there.

But if you’re interested in the cut and dry version, here you go: Apocalypse is a very, very ancient mutant. The first mutant, in fact, and he has a wide array of powers ranging from being able to manipulate his own molecules (hence why the guy is effectively immortal) to telepathy, telekinesis, and technopathy. Through that innate ability to understand technology, Apocalypse has spent his lifetime augmenting his body with alien technology. This is why the skinny dude in that end credit scene may not match up with the mental image you have of a bulky, armored behemoth.

Basically, you can see how Apocalypse should easily be the toughest enemy the X-Men will have ever faced on screen. A fitting follow-up to an almost unbeatable army of Sentinels, don’t you think?

Did you catch anything else during that post-credit teaser? How do you imagine Apocalypse will be adapted for the X-Men movie universe?

X-Men: Days of Future Past is in theatres now, X-Men: Apocalypse is expected to release May 27th, 2016.
