Yesterday came the news that Godzilla director Gareth Edwards was cashing out his cache and buying a rocket ship to that galaxy far, far away to make the first Star Wars spin-off film in time for a December 16th, 2016 release date. The immediate thought was “awesome!” but the second thought was “what about the next Godzilla movie?” Obviously, much of Godzilla’s success comes from what Edwards brought to the film in terms of its tone and style, so they’d have to be crazy not to find a way to bring him back for a part 2. So to prove they’re not crazy, the folks at Legendary Pictures today have confirmed that Edwards will by back for Godzilla 2. And maybe 3 and 4.
While talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Legendary Pictures’ CEO Thomas Tull says that it was always part of the plan to let Edwards take a break from Godzilla by making another film before starting work on a sequel. The fact that the film in question turned out to be a Star Wars movie was just a pleasant surprise.
“Gareth’s filmmaking talent makes him one of his generation’s most creative and visionary directors. The plan has always been for Gareth to direct a different film before we started on another Godzilla, but who knew it would be a Star Wars installment? We have a great plan in store for Godzilla fans and I am looking forward to seeing Gareth’s imprint on the Star Wars universe.”
So the soonest we might expect another Godzilla movie on Edwards schedule is late 2017, maybe even 2018. In Hollywood years that’s a long time, but we did just wait 16 years for an American studio to get Godzilla right, so it’s all relative. Of course, that timetable will also depend on whether or not Edwards decides to return. These huge movies are no cake walk in the tea park for the filmmakers, maybe he’ll be blockbustered out after Godzilla and Star Wars. Time will tell.
Also, it’s worth noting that there’s still the guessing game about what Edwards will be making; what that Star Wars movie will be about, or rather who it might be about. Speculation is that Boba Fett and Han Solo movies are primary ideas on deck. Me? I’m hoping for a Bib Fortuna work place comedy about the stress of being Jabba the Hutt’s butler during one wacky night at Jabba’s Palace. I’ve got my fingers crossed for that one.
