Yesterday, the Internet was alive with rumors of the casting of Boardwalk Empire‘s Charlie Cox as Marvel/Netflix‘s new Daredevil. Since the cat was out of the bag, Marvel has gone ahead and made it official with a statement that includes an interesting bit about the series setup.
Here’s the official announcement from Marvel:
Marvel is proud to announce that acclaimed actor Charlie Cox has joined “Marvel’s Daredevil,” an all-new 13-episode series premiering on Netflix in 2015. Best known for his acclaimed work in “Boardwalk Empire” and “Stardust,” Cox will play Matt Murdock, the lead role in this all-new Marvel Television series. Blinded as a young boy but imbued with extraordinary senses, Matt Murdock fights against injustice by day as a lawyer, and by night as the super hero Daredevil in modern day Hell’s Kitchen, New York City.
Marvel’s first original series on Netflix is Executive Produced by series Showrunner Steven S. DeKnight (“Spartacus,” “Buffy: The Vampire Slayer,” “Angel”) and Drew Goddard (“Cabin in the Woods,” “Lost,” “Buffy: The Vampire Slayer,” in addition to writing the first two episodes of “Marvel’s Daredevil), along with Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Smallville,” “Heroes”).
That mention of modern-day Hell’s Kitchen dispels any thoughts of this series being set in the 70’s. It’s too bad, I was hoping to see that bit of Daredevil rumor come true. I’m not worried though, I’m sure there is still a lot of injustice Daredevil can correct in modern-day Hell’s Kitchen.
Now we know the show-runner was recently changed, but it looks like they will be using the two scripts Goddard had already completed and he will be staying on as a consultant.
What Daredevil story lines do you want to see them tackle? I’d like to see something we haven’t seen yet on the big screen, and I’d really like to see Black Widow make an appearance or two. I know it’s too much to expect Natasha Romanova (Scarlett Johansson) to be a series regular, but Black Widow is such a big part of the Daredevil mythos and fans deserve to see the Widow make the scene.
The most likely centerpiece villain will be the Kingpin, I just hope they don’t just rehash the Kingpin/Electra/Bullseye storyline right off the bat. Let’s keep Kingpin in the background until a big reveal later in the series.
The Daredevil series will most likely also be the vehicle used to introduce the other characters, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage before their perspective shows begin production. Weaving them into Daredevil’s world fits right into the overall plan Marvel has for the four show’s characters.
What are your thoughts on the series and this casting news?
