It was a provocative tweet to say the least. Sure, any director can say “My next movie will be strange,” but usually that’s just a statement of quality. In this case, Scott Derrickson means Strange, Doctor Strange. As the upset of Edgar Wright’s departure from Ant Man has more or less died down, this news is surely designed to get people excited about Marvel movies again, especially after the Sorcerer Supreme was name dropped in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. But is this news legit, or another oddly specific rumor testing the waters?

Variety is reporting tonight that Derrickson is close to signing a deal to direct a film based on a character they hope will be their next, big franchise player, Doctor Strange. In the comics Strange is an accomplished surgeon who’s hands are ruined in an accident. Desperate to get back on top of his game, he seeks out unconventional options, like magic, to regain his prowess. Instead he gets a new job, learning from the Ancient One he becomes Master of the Mystic Arts, the Sorcerer Supreme, protector of our reality from all forms of supernatural threat.
As for Derrickson’s resume, he enjoyed success co-writing and directing the horror hit Sinister as well as directing The Exorcism of Emily Rose and The Day the Earth Stood Still remake. His next film is the highly anticipated true-horror flick Deliver Us From Evil starring Eric Bana and Edgar Ramirez, two guys who, if you can believe it, are now being associated with the title role in Doctor Strange. Might be a little awkward for Bana considering he was Bruce Banner in Ang Lee’s Hulk, but if Ray Stevenson can trade in Punisher for Volstagg…
There’s not word yet on a screenplay, although several screenwriters have been toiling on one, or of a release date, although Marvel’s got some prime real estate on the 2016, 2017 and 2018 calendars staked out, but if they sign Derrickson in the short term look for developments to start moving very, very quickly.
We’ll have more news as it develops.
UPDATE – Bleeding Cool is reporting a rumor concerning a short list for the casting of Doctor Strange. Although the usual suspects like Johnny Depp, Mads Mikkelsen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are name-dropped, one unusual choice seems to stand out about the rest: Academy Award-winning actor, Jarod Leto.
have also heard that Marvel likes (or liked, I don’t know what the current status of this is) Jared Leto for Stephen Strange. God help us all if that’s true.
So is Leto the Strange to beat? Stay tuned.
