Looks like Guillermo del Toro‘s return to vampire adventures (remember Blade II, arguably the best of the Blades) is going for the jugular, both literally and figuratively. The Strain premieres next month, but below you can get your first, long look at the series and what del Toro and Co. have in store. Let’s just say that this may be the vampire show you’ve been waiting, or rather it’s the vampire show you’ve been waiting for if your ideal bloodsucker is more Bram Stoker than Stephanie Meyer (or Charlaine Harris) for that matter.

Let’s roll the videotape (as it were):

So what did you think? The whole thing with the plane has kind of a Fringe vibe, but it seems as though del Toro’s taken vampires to the next level with this one, with all the blood and guts and intrigue and gothic mood that one should expect, and receive, from a vampire TV series.

Based on a novel series by del Toro and Chuck Hogan, The Strain follows a group of CDC doctors, government officials and civilians dealing with an outbreak of vampirism that starts at New York’s JFK airport and starts to spread. The series stars Corey Stoll, David Bradley, Kevin Durand, Mía Maestro, Jonathan Hyde, Francis Capra, Melanie Merkosky and Sean Astin, while Carlton Cuse (Lost) serves as showrunner.

The Strain premieres on FX Sunday July 13.
