With less than two months until the release date of the Wachowskis‘ brothers latest sci-fi epic Jupiter Ascending, Warner Brothers has announced that the film’s release date has been moved to February 6th, 2015. Why the change?
There are a couple of things to look at, why, didn’t the film make its scheduled release date and why, when moving it back, did the studio decide to take the film from a summer release date to a dead-of-February date. When was the last time you remember a big blockbuster franchise-starting-tent-pole movie open in February?
The film has two big box office stars in Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, and it probably even has a Sean Bean death scene in it! I mean if Sean Bean is in it, there has to be a death scene, it’s only logical. Those two have shown that they can put butts in the theater seats and perhaps Warner Brothers and the Wachowskis are banking on that star power draw to overcome those traditional February theater going doldrums.
Word around the Internet is that the FX laden film needed more time to finish all those fancy new CGI effects. There are no re-shoots planned or announced, so unless we hear something soon, I wouldn’t imagine the release-date-moving-problem would be actor/plot-line related.
You might remember that G.I.Joe: Retaliation moved their release date back, but even they wouldn’t move it to February and moved it to the end of March beginning of Spring. Why February then? I guess they didn’t want to go up against The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Star Wars VII. Which might be the best move, better to stand tall in February than get lost in the summer blockbuster craze that the Avengers and Star Wars will create.
What do you think, will this be another Speed Racer debacle?
