Though many would consider a follow-up to Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim to be a no-brainer, the truth of the matter is that the movie just didn’t impress the production company enough to warrant them jumping right onto a second installment. There’s been plenty of talk of a Pacific Rim 2, but so far no definitive confirmation. Either way, del Toro is confident enough in the sequel’s approval that he’s been working on the script for some time now.

While talking to BuzzFeed, del Toro had a few revelations to make regarding his progress on the script for Pacific Rim 2:

“I’m working very, very hard with Zak Penn. We’ve been working for a few months now in secret. We found a way to twist it around. Travis Beacham [co-writer of the first film, now working on Fox’s Hieroglyph] was involved in the storyline and now I’m writing with Zak because Travis has become a TV mogul.”

Of course, no one has given the green light on the film. At least not in the “here’s a buttload of money” way that production companies kind of have to do in order for a project to actually be made. Still, del Toro doesn’t seem worried in the least.

“I don’t have the money, but I’m proceeding like it is happening.”

And what shall the second incarnation of Pacific Rim be about? Some people have hoped for a prequel, detailing all the battles that led up to the grand finale we saw in the first movie. Del Toro, however, has other ideas.

“Some people were wondering if we were going to do the prequel. I was never interested in doing that first wave of invasion. I’m going for very new, very crazy ideas on the second one, which are very different from the first one — but you will get really great spectacle.”

Currently del Toro is doing press for The Strain and will next be moving on to direct Crimson Peak. He has voiced his desire to start on the next Pacific Rim movie as his next project, however, so that flick may be coming up faster than we anticipate. For now, we’ll just have to sit back and wait to see what happens between here and there.

What say thee, O’ Nerd Readers? Eager to see a return to Pacific Rim? Or did the first movie do all that it needed to do?
