When i was asked to cover E3‘s release of the new Star Wars trailer, I came close to crapping myself! An Episode 7 trailer? At E3? ALREADY???
Well, as you’ve no doubt gathered from the headline, E3 has NOT released a trailer for Star Wars: Episode VII….
But honestly–even if you’re like me and not big on modern video games–what we have here is damn near almost as good.
EA’s Dice Studio has put together probably the closest thing any of us is likely to get to gaming inside the worlds of the Star Wars Original Trilogy.
I don’t mean playing a game BASED on the OT–there have been dozens of those–I mean literally riding a speeder bike through the forests of Endor, or fighting off Imperial walkers in a snowspeeder on Hoth.
Dice made captures of the original movie props in the Lucas archives, and visited some of the actual locations the first three films were shot at to capture backgrounds.
I admit, this is more of a heavy-handed, emotionally manipulative sales pitch than a TRUE trailer. Footage of actual game play is in short supply, and it’s all in-engine footage–no way to tell if the finished product is going to look like what we see here.
But I don’t think most fans are going to care (I know I don’t), this looks fantastic, and marks the first time I’ve been excited about a video game since I got Street Fighter II on the SNES for my birthday decades ago (I’m an old man).
No official release date has been set, though the trailer mentions spring 2015….I wouldn’t lend too much weight to that–we all know how things go with video game releases….
Here’s the trailer:
