E3 truly is the best time of the year for video gamers. Everything looks fantastic, and we’re still too far away to know what’s going to turn out to be crap. Regardless of what hits and what misses, it’s almost a given that any entry in the Batman: Arkham series will be a success, and I’m happy to say that the first gameplay trailer for Batman: Arkham Knight doesn’t disappoint! It’s clear to see why it was recently announced that the game’s release would be pushed back to 2015. This game is MASSIVE! To be honest, when Batman does his dive into the city, giving us a clear view of the Gotham City skyline, I was actually sort of anxious in thinking about how I’d be able to explore this sprawling, highly detailed world. Bat-mobile or not, it’s going to take some time to really get acclimated to this re-envisioned Gotham, which obviously isn’t a bad thing.
The one issue I have with this trailer, however, is the demonstration of combat. I’m sure it could have just been for the trailer, but during the one hand-to-hand scene we got in the trailer, the world slowed with every strike Batman threw– what’s that about? I suppose this could have been some sort of new stealth situation, given that Batman took the first guy by surprise, but I would have really liked to see how the free-flow combat looked with all of the added detail that next-gen consoles bring. I’m still not entirely sold on the Bat-mobile and its Battle Mode, but hopefully, we’ll see more of that soon.
