There is no doubt that AMC’s The Walking Dead is a massive, massive hit. It brings in numbers like nothing else on TV. It also packs a punch, giving viewers more zombie blood and guts and scares than most thought possible. It’s a cultural touchstone, a ratings juggernaut and a constant Trending Topic on Twitter. Hell, even the show about the show is a huge hit.
But how long can The Walking Dead go on? Nothing good ever lasts forever, even if networks try their hardest to prevent the inevitable. So how much longer does The Walking Dead have? A couple more seasons? Three or four? Well, according to one of its producers, quite a few.
At a PGA Producers panel, Dead producer David Alpert said the show has a lot of steam left in it. A whole lot.
“I happen to love working from source material, specifically because we have a pretty good idea of what season 10 is gonna be. We know where season 11 and 12…we have benchmarks and milestones for those seasons if we’re lucky enough to get there.”
So, thanks to the comic book on which it’s based, the series could run for many more years. The show just finished up its fourth season so Alpert’s plan could keep the series on TV through 2021. That’s…insane.
Of course, it’s unlikely the show will last that long. As I said earlier, nothing good ever lasts forever. While The Walking Dead is a mega-hit now, it won’t be always. The ratings won’t stay as high, actors will leave, AMC will get other shows that eventually overshadow it. The television landscape will alter. Right now it feels like this show could endure ages but it won’t. While Alpert has high hopes, that’s exactly what they are: hopes.
The Walking Dead isn’t a bad show, not by any means. It’s not great, however. It could be though. If they work on the characters, create more ample human drama and explore themes that transcend the apocalyptic setting, The Walking Dead could deserve a long, long run. Perhaps that’s what bugs me most about the show: it has so much potential and it’s playing with one of my favorite genres. To see it be anything less than constantly stellar just bums me out.
I would love for a zombie show to last 11 or 12 seasons. I don’t think The Walking Dead will, despite what David Alpert says.
