DC and Warner Bros are still playing major catch-up with Marvel Studios but it seems like they are diving headfirst into the future of their superhero films.
If a new report is to be believed, DC and WB have a huge slate of films planned, starting with Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. What follows that wildly anticipated film? A whole lot, including Shazam, Wonder Woman and even a Green Lantern and Flash team-up film.
That’s quite an undertaking, DC. Let’s take a look at how it’s laid out.
According to NikkiFinke.com (yeah, she’s back…), this is how DC and Warner Bros are plotting things:
May 2016 – Batman v Superman
July 2016 – Shazam
Xmas 2016 – Sandman
May 2017 – Justice League
July 2017 – Wonder Woman
Xmas 2017 – Flash and Green Lantern team-up
May 2018 – Man Of Steel 2
Wow, so Shazam is on the way shortly. So does that mean Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is going to be playing the character? He’s been a rumored choice for a long time and has been making noise about meeting with DC lately. We couldn’t get a handle on who he was meeting about but if Shazam is the first film up after Batman V Superman then The Rock might already be cast.
There are a few other surprises here, including a Flash and Green Lantern team-up film. I would’ve assumed each character would have gotten their own flicks but maybe GL’s brand is still too dinged up from the Ryan Reynolds train wreck. As for The Flash, he’s getting his own TV show next season so he’ll be getting plenty of spotlight even if he’s sharing a movie with Green Lantern.
Many will be happy to see DC and WB finally working on a Wonder Woman film. While some are still peeved about Gal Gadot’s casting as the character, seeing her finally get her own film is long overdue and a reason to celebrate.
The biggest question I have is how Man Of Steel 2 will conflict with Marvel’s slate. Isn’t 2018 around the time that The Avengers 3 will hit theaters? Could DC be brave enough to put Superman head-to-head with The Avengers? I’m not an expert but that sounds like a dumb, dumb idea on DC’s part. Keep him away from The Avengers. Keep everything away from The Avengers.
Finke also goes on to say that many of these characters will be making their first appearances in Batman V Superman, including The Flash and maybe Green Lantern. Many assumed the film’s production start date was delayed because of script problems but maybe it was delayed because the powers that be were searching for the right actors to play these iconic parts. If they have indeed found the talent, will they be introduced soon? Hey, why not bring them all on stage at Comic-Con in July? That’s a bold, Marvel-like move that’ll generate so much heat the internet might melt.
Whether it be casting choices or confirmation on this supposed schedule, we are bound to hear more about DC and WB’s plans in the coming months, especially from San Diego in July.
