My love for Michael Keaton borders on obsession. And, no, I’m not a huge fan of him just because he played Batman. Keaton’s comedic skills and intensity and overall character work is unlike anyone else out there. Often mimicked but never duplicated, Keaton is in a class of his own.
That’s why it’s such a bummer that he’s been below the radar for so long. However, when he does re-emerge in something (even the iffy RoboCop remake) people always say, “Hey, why isn’t Michael Keaton in more stuff? And why isn’t he a bigger star?”
With his new film, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman, Keaton might be getting that comeback he so rightly deserves.Birdman is about a struggling actor who once played a very famous superhero but whose career has faded quite a bit. Sound familiar? Battling with other actors and seemingly his own sanity, this performer (Keaton) struggles to mount a Broadway show in hopes of reviving his career. As the trailer shows, this is going to be one dark comedy, which is surprising because it’s coming from Iñárritu, the man who gave us bleak dramas like Babel and Amores Perros. To see him take on comedy is a major selling point, especially with a killer cast featuring Keaton, Emma Stone, Edward Norton (seen below in some peculiar tightie whities) Zach Galifianakis, Amy Ryan and more. Stacked cast, interesting story and an actor who has been ready to once again prove his leading man abilities for ages. Birdman just shot up to the top of your must-see list.
While it is a comedy, Birdman is going to be a festival darling before it hits the big screen. Expect to see this puppy pop up in several circuits – and maybe even pick up an award or two – before it lands at your local cinema on October 17th.
The trailer and awesome poster are below. Watch and enjoy. Even if this wasn’t being billed as Michael Keaton’s big comeback, Birdman would be something to get excited about. Plus, like I said, Edward Norton is his underwear.
