IGN Middle East is reporting that their source puts Simon Pegg on the Star Wars VII Abu Dhabi set before filming completed recently. Is this just another crazy Star Wars rumor?
Everyone knows that Pegg is a huge Star Wars fan, even going so far as filming his own Star Wars scene with friend and movie partner Nick Frost for College Humor.
Now many of you are thinking, wait a minute. Pegg has already commented about the possibility of his involvement in Star Wars VII:
I don’t think it would be appropriate for me to be in it, to be honest. I think J.J. should cast new faces with no stunt casting.
Now we come back to what IGN Middle East has to say on the subject:
According to our source, actor Simon Pegg, previously seen in JJ Abram’s ‘Star Trek’ series and ‘Mission Impossible 3’, is in fact playing a secret role in the film and was present on set to shoot scenes in Abu Dhabi. This is in stark contrast to what Pegg had to say about a possibility of starring in Star Wars previously:
“I don’t think it would be appropriate for me to be in it, to be honest. I think J.J. should cast new faces with no stunt casting.”
Whether he changed his mind or this was a ruse all along, the fact is that Pegg may have an unannounced cameo or role in the film that we don’t know about just yet. It’s exciting to see a re-union for the two and makes us more enthusiastic for Star Wars: Episode VII if that were even possible.
Hmm, if true, there are still a number of reasonable explanations for Pegg’s visit to the set that don’t include him joining the production. Anyone that’s as big a fan of Star Wars as Pegg would give their right arm just to visit the set and it could be just that simple an explanation. When you consider his close working relationship with director J.J. Abrams, there’s just another perfectly plausible reason for Pegg to visit the set.
I do find myself hoping that Pegg is in the film, not in any major role, but in a nice nerdy head nodding cameo. In fact, I think I’ll be disappointed now if Pegg doesn’t show up in some manner. Even if it’s only Pegg voicing a droid of some kind. Still, there’s no official word on his involvement… YET.
Brendon Connelly of Bleeding Cool weighed in on the IGN Middle East story saying this:
Nonetheless, IGN Middle East are confident that he’s in the picture and did some filming already in Abu Dhabi. As I said, I believe it.
I sat and spoke to Pegg for 25 minutes yesterday. He didn’t show obvious signs of an Abu Dhabi tan. Nor did I ask him any dull Star Wars questions – we had other business to talk about, which you can read of in August. Still, asking Simon Pegg if he’ll be in Episode VII is a bit like asking water if it’s wet, isn’t it? Water that has signed an iron-and-concrete NDA and would probably change the subject immediately and start talking about, I dunno, dust or something?
It’s definitely something to think about and a lot of the Star Wars forum pages will soon be raging with fans on both sides of the fence. If those same forum pages aren’t already.
Like all the Star Wars rumors, take this one with a grain of salt. Even if all the arrows end up pointing to the same conclusion.
