Citizens of Townsville! Those tiny heroes made of sugar, spice, and everything–CHEMICAL X are back! The Powerpuff Girls are returning to Cartoon Network with a whole new series in 2016.
The original Powerpuff Girls ran 1998 to 2005 and proved to be one of Cartoon Network’s most successful original series. And even after all these years, The Powerpuff Girls remain super popular and will often have their iconic designs mimicked over and over and over.
Only earlier this year Cartoon Network premiered a new Powerpuff special called The Powerpuff Girls: Dance Pantsed which reunited Blossom, Buttercup, and Bubbles (as well as their voice actresses Catherine Cavadini, E.G. Daily, and Tara Strong). This special also featured a new animation style for the girls:
The new series planned for 2016 comes from the show’s creator Craig McCracken and Cavadini, Daily, and Strong are expected to return, but for them there’s been no official word. Whether or not it’ll feature the new or old animation style is also unclear, but CN is invested in revitalizing the Powerpuff brand.
Pete Yoder, vice president of consumer products for North America Cartoon Network Enterprises, had this to say:
“As the original ambassador of ‘girl power,’ ‘The Powerpuff Girls’ brand continues to resonate with people of all ages and there is tremendous excitement around introducing Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup to a new generation. With proven success and great content plans in place, there’s so much potential that we’re looking forward to explore with our licensing partners in the coming weeks.”
I’m sure the Spice Girls or any of the dozens of women’s right activists would take offense at the Powerpuff Girls being the “original” ambassadors of girl power, but it’s a great sign to see CN recognizing the need for more girl-centric programming nonetheless.
