Every year or so, someone feels the need to ask one of the old X-Files crew about whether or not we’re going to be seeing a return to that classic, alien and monster-hunting series. And while most of the former X-Filers seem keen on the idea, the truth of the matter is that the franchise just isn’t making enough money for the company to want to green light more. Now, David Duchovny is stepping up to inform the world – yet again – that he’s ready, willing and able to get started on more X-Files whenever the universe commands.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Duchovny had these words to share:
“I would always want to do it. I wish we’d done more already. I wish the second one did better business. I think it did OK business, but not the kind of business where you get to do another one right away …
“It’s just a matter of interest from Fox and scheduling. Chris has got a new show. Gillian’s working. I’m working. It’s not impossible, but it’s not easy. And I never think it’s done. I’d say, it’s never done until one of us dies – until one of us three is gone.”
While Duchovny’s run on Californication is ending, it looks like he’s going to be a busy boy, at least for a little while, jumping into his new show, Aquarius. Furthermore, Gillian Anderson and Chris Carter aren’t as open with their schedules as they could be. Not to mention the fact that no one with money wants to fund a return to X-Files.
So, while Duchovny holds onto the dream, the rest of the world moves on. And while this may seem like a grim ending for The X-Files, fans everywhere can rest assure that they’ll get back to it sometime. After all, Hollywood manages to recycle, reuse and reboot anything and everything they possibly can. Why would The X-Files be any different? One of these days, they’ll see a paycheck waiting under the X-Files name and then it will be back to business. The only question is – will the holy X-Files trinity still be alive when that happens?
What say thee, Nerd Readers? More X-Files now? Should we let the series rest in peace? Or are you holding out for some amazing rebootening, complete with new actors and a revamped storyline?
