As time runs out before the August 1st premiere date of James Gunn‘s much anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe Movie Guardians of the Galaxy, Gunn reached out to fans to discuss wrapping up the production and attempting to squash, once and for all, the Nathan Fillion GOTG cameo rumors.

Gunn posted this on his Facebook account:

I swear, I’ve gotten angry with filmmakers like Ridley Scott and George Lucas who can’t let go of their old films and want to keep going back and offering up different versions, but I can easily see myself doing that now.

This is essentially my last week of actually making Guardians of the Galaxy. It’s been two years straight and I’ve starting to become terrified of actually having to STOP. But on July 7 I leave for Singapore to begin the press tour so I suppose I really have no choice.

There isn’t much left. I’m still playing with the sound mix and the 3D and the DI (digital intermediate – basically the color-timing) – and there are some outstanding visual effects shots. But I still want to do what I can with what I have left to make the most stunning film I can for you guys on August 1! I think the Marvel producers are starting to understand my almost psychotic inability to be happy with anything, and to pick apart things to the very bitter end. They’re going to have to tear this movie from my bloody grip.

Aagh.

I’m starting to get very sad every time I think of how I’m going to miss all of the people I’ve been working with side-by-side for the past two years. And – to show you how strange I really am – I get teary-eyed when I think of how I won’t be working with Rocket (at least for a little while). He’s been the center of my life for a long time now, and I’ve come to love the little son-of-a-bitch. Really.

Let’s be honest. I’m getting teary-eyed now writing those words. And yes that may be a sign that I really am in need of a break.

But for now, it’s back to work. Love to you all. Have a fantastic weekend.

Guardians of the Galaxy has certainly been a labor of love for Gunn, and the expected box office success should put Gunn on a path to bring his team of ruffians toward that inevitable meet-up with the Avengers. The burning question that I want answered is, “What other Marvel character would Gunn like to get his hands on?”

My choice:

The Internet can be a snapping turtle at times, and in this instance the Internet has locked its jaws on Nathan Fillion’s cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy. Gunn once again tried to address the rumor and put it to rest, but we all know that won’t work. This subject will be the focal point for so many rumors and until fans actually see the cameo on the big screen, we all know that Nathan Fillion’s cameo will be…

The rumor that would not die.

Here’s Gunn taking another stab at the rumor:

Nathan Fillion is not Nova. There’s so much bullshit on the internet. I woke up – first it’s ‘Nathan’s Nova!’, then there are articles all over saying Nathan’s Cosmo. It’s like, ‘What?!’ Nathan’s role is a very small cameo that I wanted to give to Nathan because I love working with him and I think it’s lucky for me to have Nathan in all of my movies. At the same time I wanted to give him something where Nathan could have a larger role in the Marvel Universe if either Joss [Whedon] or I or whoever chose to do that in the future. Which I would love to do. I would love to give Nathan something he could really chew on, but it didn’t work out on this movie for two reasons. Number one — because he was shooting Castle. And number two, because it just wasn’t the right exact role for him.

I’m still hoping that this happens:

I know that Gunn and Fillion have said that you won’t recognize Fillion in his cameo and will have to check the credits to know which character he played, but the Browncoat in me just won’t let it go.

What do you think, have you read all the rumors and speculation? Set me straight in the comments section below!
