Superman Coming to ‘Arrow’ as The Atom

Well, that’s kind of a confusing headline. What do we mean? To put it simply Devon Aoki‘s Katana isn’t the only new DC Comics character to join the cast of the third season of Arrow, as Superman Returns star Brandon Routh has now signed up to play Ray “The Atom” Palmer in the CW series. And nope, this looks like no mere cameo either as Routh has been booked for what looks like an extended stay in Starling City.

According to TV Line, Routh has been been contracted to do 14 episodes of Arrow this season as Palmer. It’s unclear whether or not Routh’s Palmer will also have a super-powered costume identity, but he apparently is going to have a pretty big role at Queen Consolidated, the company once owned by our hero, Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell).

“An unparalleled scientist and inventor, Ray will play an unexpected role in the lives of Oliver and Felicity as the new owner of Queen Consolidated,” said a statement. “Palmer’s plans for Queen Consolidated’s Applied Sciences Division will be shrouded in mystery.”

What may not be shrouded in mystery is Palmer’s intentions for Arrow’s sidekick and platonic romance partner Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards), TV Line adds that Palmer might have potential romantic interest in Felicity, which, at this point, is kind of making her the Arrow equivalent of Smallville’s Lois Lane: romantically connected with every hero at one point or another.

In the comics, Palmer is a talented scientist who uses a piece of a white dwarf star to change his molecular density, meaning he can increase his molecular density to make himself strong enough to punch a concrete wall, or decrease his mass making him light enough to glide on the wind. Obviously, he’s also able to shrink himself down to the size of a… Well, you know.

Along with playing the title role in Superman Returns, Routh’s comic book experience also extends to playing Evil Ex #3 Todd in Scott Pilgrim Vs The World and giving voice to Everywhere Man in the animated series The Batman.

Arrow’s third season premieres this October on the CW.
